La polémica suscitada entre los astrónomos reunidos en Praga finaliza con la exclusión de Plutón como planeta. A pesar de los intentos de mantener a Plutón como planeta incorporando a esta categoría a Ceres, Caronte y Xena, se ha impuesto el planteamiento que sostenían entre otros el astrónomo japonés Junachi Watanabe y que crea una nueva categoría de planeta enano. Al margen de Plutón, Xena será el segundo planeta enano del sistema. La Unión Astronómica Internacional, fundada en 1.919, ha debatido el asunto más espinoso de su historia. El día de la clausura de la reunión, 24 de Agosto, se asumirá por parte de todos los miembros una nueva definición de planeta que será dada a conocer en breve.

- Encuentro Astronómico Astromartos 2.006, organizado por la Asociación Astronómica Hubble, de Martos, Jaén. Ponencias, exposiciones fotográficas, y comunicaciones durante los días 29 y 30 de Julio.
- XXV Aniversario del Observatorio de Sierra Nevada. Coincidiendo con este acontecimiento están programadas visitas los días 1 de Julio y 5 de Agosto. Las visitas se realizan en colaboración con el Instituto de Radioastronomía Milimétrica y con distintas asociaciones astronómicas. - Encuentros Solares, organizados por el Parque de las Ciencias de Granada y la Fundación Terra los días 15 y 16 de Julio. Multitud de actividades encaminadas a concienciar al público en general de la necesidad de utilizar las energías alternativas, en este caso, la solar.
- Lluvias de estrellas durante los meses de Julio y Agosto. A destacar, las Acuáridas, con un máximo el 28 de Julio, y las Perseidas, con un máximo el 11 de Agosto. La Estación de Sierra Nevada organiza una observación coincidiendo con las Perseidas.
- Curso de verano de la Universidad de Málaga “Comunicación del riesgo”. Dirigido por Malén Ruiz Elvira y organizado por Elena Sanz, contará con importantes divulgadores científicos. Del 10 al 16 de Julio.

UNA VIDA PARA LA CIENCIA
Nuestro homenaje esta semana para Juan Cabré, arqueólogo nacido en Calaceite en 1.882 y fallecido en Madrid en 1.947. Con sólo veintiún años descubrió las pinturas rupestres de Calapatá. Sus artículos publicados en el Boletín de la Academia de la Historia despertaron gran interés. En 1.914 publicó “El arte rupestre en España”, que fue la primera obra española de conjunto en esta materia. Realizó numerosas excavaciones, destacando entre ellas las de la necrópolis de Tútugi, el dolmen de Menga, las necrópolis de Las Cogotas y La Osera, el poblado de Azalla y la ciudad visigótica de Recópolis. Sus publicaciones pasan del centenar y tratan sobre el arte rupestre en España, la industria del paleolítico inferior, y la época del bronce y la del hierro. Pertenecía al Consejo Superior de Investigaciones Científicas y en 1.945 el gobierno le concedió la cruz de Alfonso X el Sabio.
